MSHA Training FAQ
Frequently asked questions about MSHA Part 46, Part 48, annual refresher, and virtual training. Marwil Safety—Maryland-based, serving mines nationwide.
What is the difference between MSHA Part 46 and Part 48?
Part 46 applies to surface nonmetal mines (sand, gravel, stone, clay, colloidal phosphate, surface limestone, etc.). Part 48 applies to coal mines, underground metal/nonmetal mines, and surface areas of underground mines. Both require 24 hours of new miner training and 8 hours of annual refresher training. If you're unsure which applies to your site, MSHA or a qualified instructor can help.
How often do I need MSHA refresher training?
Under both Part 46 and Part 48, miners must complete at least 8 hours of annual refresher training within 12 months of their last refresher. Training must be completed before the 12-month anniversary. Schedule classes in advance; don't wait until the last month.
Is virtual MSHA training accepted by MSHA?
Yes. MSHA accepts virtual training when it meets the same standards as in-person instruction—including live interaction with an instructor. Pre-recorded only video courses typically do not meet MSHA requirements. Marwil Safety offers live instructor-led virtual classes.
How long does new miner training take?
New miner training is 24 hours total, typically spread over 3–4 days (6–8 hours per day). Miners cannot perform full duties until training is complete. Upon completion, you receive a certificate. Your employer must maintain records and provide site-specific task training.
